Change of Plans

Well, at 7:00pm today by my calendar, I would have been conducting a signing/reading/meet-and-greet at The Bookshelf in downtown Guelph . . . were it not for the current COVID-19 situation.

I must confess, I'm pretty fortunate in that self-isolation has not (thus far) thrown many horrendous wrenches in my year. Others are suffering far more crushing disappointments as COVID-19 shuts down even the best-laid plans, but there is still a part of me that wishes I had waited, instead of setting myself up for the postponement of this book event.

I'm sure you can relate. The slough of cancellations, delays and postponements as a result of this virus can raise questions: Why would God let this happen right now? Why wouldn't He wait for a better time? Why does it all have to happen at once?

Why, indeed. If only God were obligated to explain His perfect plan to us.

The sovereignty of God is one of the greatest comforts in uncertain times like these. The knowledge that He knows exactly what He is doing, that this is happening now because now is, in fact, the perfect time, that nothing comes as a surprise to Him or grows beyond His control, reminds us that we have only a glimpse of the full picture. God has each of our lives securely in hand, 7 billion threads all interwoven and inter-related and yet beautifully, masterfully individual. He didn't forget about your piano recital; He hasn't overlooked your health issues, or made blessing budget cuts to your life to make ends meet in someone else's.

God has all our lives under unique, complete, unfailing control, and His plans, unlike ours, do not change with circumstances. We can trust that He is working things together for a purpose that may be bigger than our little lives, but is always, always good.
