Well, I don't know where the first three and a half months of this year have gone, but it's probably time to check in on those spiritual goals for 2020 . . .
Yeah. Remember those?
I'm not usually one to make solid or specific New Year's Resolutions, but in January I found there was something on my mind that I truly hoped to improve this year. The desire of my heart was to reach a new depth in my communication with Christ. I was finding my interactions with Jesus compartmentalized into my morning devotion, evening prayer, and mealtime thanks, and in January I decided that this year would be a time to master the art of praying without ceasing.
Well, master is a loaded word. Maybe improve is more realistic. The point is, I entered 2020 desiring more constant communion with Christ.
True confessions: as January has melted into April, my focus seems to have melted with it, and I find myself struggling to recapture the momentum I had at the beginning of the year.
Fortunately, this is just the kind of situation that requires communication with Christ. Though I know I have temporarily lost sight of my goal, I also know that it is never too late to keep moving forward with the help of the Lord. In acknowledging my weakness, I can make room for his strength to take over and continue his heavenly work in me. In Christ's words: "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness." (II Corinthians 12:9)
Jesus can use our human faultiness as a means of accomplishing his work—as long as we continue to put one foot in front of the other and call upon his name to keep us moving in the right direction, we will find ourselves growing into our spiritual goals. It will just be on his timeline, not ours.
